Abstract: Throughout the years, cosmetics companies have been accused of sustainability-related issues in their supply chains, such as testing products on animals, causing environmental pollution, and posing risks to human health from toxic cosmetic ingredients. To address these concerns, cosmetics companies have now started paying attention to their supply chains’ sustainability and established practices to help them to achieve overall supply chain sustainability. This study aims to explore the internal and external sustainability practices of three Finnish cosmetics companies through a multiple-case study, using interviews and secondary data as sources. These practices have been established to maintain or develop social and environmental sustainability in companies or across supply chains. In light of previous research on the supply chain practice view, the focus is to examine easily transferable practices across firms that companies have adopted to gain better sustainability performance outcomes. Alongside practices, barriers to sustainability implementation are addressed, as they often work as guiding tools for companies to apply certain sustainability practices. The results indicate that cosmetic companies adopt both internal and external sustainability practices, such as increasing local sourcing, seeking alternatives to unsustainable raw materials, collaborating with suppliers, and ensuring compliance through monitoring. Based on the results, adopted practices share significant similarities, but organizational factors played a major role in their implementation. Additionally, barriers such as a lack of internal expertise, resources, and limited transparency in ingredient sourcing were recognized as key challenges for companies to overcome.
