Research progress and development trends in asphalt pavement construction technology for cold regions

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Asphalt pavement construction in cold regions faces multiple environmental stresses, including rapid cooling, steep temperature gradients, and frequent freeze–thaw cycles. These factors drastically shorten the compaction time window, weaken interfacial bonding, and significantly amplify initial quality deviations during early service life. However, existing construction systems predominantly rely on empirical adjustments, characterized by coarse-grained temperature management, delayed compaction control, and inadequate equipment adaptability. These limitations make it difficult to suppress temperature segregation, weak interlayer bonding, and early-stage defects at their source. To address this, this paper systematically summarizes key constraints in construction processes, organization, and equipment performance. It comprehensively reviews the latest advancements in core technologies, including material heating and insulation, temperature-controlled materials, temperature-controlled transportation, intelligent paving and compaction, digital construction monitoring, snowmelt drainage, and equipment low-temperature adaptability. Results indicate that enhanced temperature maintenance and dynamic control throughout mixing-transport-paving effectively suppresses temperature segregation. Intelligent compaction and real-time temperature monitoring improve compaction uniformity and interlayer quality. Insulation materials and low-temperature equipment protection enhance construction continuity and reliability. Cold-region construction technology is accelerating toward precision temperature control and intelligent coordination. This paper provides systematic technical references and future development guidance for high-performance road construction in extreme cold environments.
