The Liminal Field: for Example

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: SHORT DESCRIPTION (EN) A phenomenological analysis of the hypnagogic state as a concrete manifestation of the liminal field, where inner content becomes externally perceivable through non‑physical visions that arise only at a precise physiological threshold between wakefulness and sleep. Abstract English A reflection on the hypnagogic state as a concrete example of the liminal field. The text explores the border zone between wakefulness and sleep, where non‑physical visions emerge that cannot be produced by imagination or will. The liminal is presented as a transitional dimension where inner content becomes externally perceivable, though only under specific physiological conditions. The work examines why the liminal disappears, why it cannot be seen with open eyes, and how its perception depends on a precise threshold between states. OpenAIRE Description (EN) This work investigates the hypnagogic state as an experiential manifestation of the liminal field. Positioned between wakefulness and sleep, the liminal is described as a non‑physical energetic domain where inner content becomes externally perceivable in the form of spontaneous visions. The text analyzes the structural reasons for its inaccessibility, the physiological constraints that prevent its perception with open eyes, and the role of the threshold state with half‑closed eyes. The study contributes to conceptual models of liminality, transitional states of consciousness, and the phenomenology of inner emergence. Extended Description (EN) The Liminal Field: For Example examines the hypnagogic state as a direct, experiential manifestation of the liminal field. Rather than treating the hypnagogic as a psychological anomaly or a pre‑sleep hallucination, the text frames it as a functional threshold where inner content becomes externally perceivable. This threshold is neither imagination nor dream: it is a transitional energetic domain that emerges only when consciousness is positioned between wakefulness and sleep. The work emphasizes that hypnagogic visions cannot be produced by will, intention, or imagination. They arise spontaneously when the mind’s filtering activity weakens and the perceptual system becomes permeable to interior content. The liminal field is therefore described as a zone of permeability, where the boundary between inner and outer loosens just enough to allow interior forms to appear as if projected outward. A central question explored in the text is why the liminal disappears: why it cannot be perceived with open eyes, why it collapses when attention becomes too active, and why it requires a precise physiological configuration — typically with half‑closed eyes, reduced muscular tone, and a softening of mental activity. The liminal is presented as a state‑dependent phenomenon, accessible only when consciousness is neither fully awake nor fully asleep. The work proposes that the hypnagogic state is not an exception but a demonstration of the liminal field’s existence. It reveals a structural property of consciousness: the ability to perceive interior content as if it were external, but only when the perceptual system is in a transitional mode. This positions the liminal as a third domain between waking perception and dreaming, governed by its own laws and thresholds. By analyzing the mechanics of disappearance, the role of physiological thresholds, and the nature of spontaneous inner emergence, the study contributes to a broader ontology of liminality, transitional states, and the phenomenology of interior perception.
