Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Employment and the Right to Livelihood

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: We live in a world that is changing faster than most people can keep up with. Artificial Intelligence, once a topic of science fiction, is now very much a part of everyday life from the chatbots that answer customer queries to the algorithms that screen job applications. While this progress is impressive, it also raises a question that affects millions of ordinary people: what happens to those whose jobs are taken over by machines? This paper looks closely at how AI is changing the employment landscape and what that means for people's right to earn a living. The right to livelihood is not just an economic concept in India, it is a fundamental right protected under the Constitution. When technology threatens that right without any safety net in place, it becomes a matter of justice, not just policy. Through a review of existing research and real-world data, this paper explores who is most affected, why current systems are not enough, and what needs to change.
