The Minimum Implementation of Reframing: Context Disposal as the Bridge Between AGI and Metacognition
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: This paper advances three propositions that form a deductive chain linking artificial generalintelligence, reframing, context disposal, and metacognition. Proposition 1: the realization ofAGI is defined not by benchmark performance but by the acquisition of reframingcapacity—the ability to revise the interpretive framework through which inputs are processed.Proposition 2: the minimum implementation of reframing is selective context disposal—theauthority to declare some currently held context no longer binding—reducing reframing from acognitive capacity to an information-processing primitive. Proposition 3: deliberate contextdisposal, as opposed to random corruption, requires metacognitive evaluation—scrutiny ofone’s own representational state to determine what to discard and what to retain—therebyproviding an operational definition of metacognition without appeal to consciousness. Thechain establishes that metacognition is not an optional feature of generally intelligent systemsbut a structural prerequisite. The architectural consequences of this chain—in particular, thequestion of how to bound the effects of context disposal while preserving the reframingcapacity that constitutes general reasoning—are identified as the central challenge for futurework.
