A systematic review of coal and co-gasification system in ceramic industries: Recent trends, lesson learned, and technological advancement
Year: 2026
Type: review
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Ceramic industry is highly energy-intensive and requires substantial thermal energy for processes such as firing, drying, and glazing. Coal and co-gasification have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional fossil fuels to address high energy demand and environmental impact of fossil fuels. The present study provides a systematic review of coal gasification systems in ceramic industry, focusing on recent trends and future direction. Using a combination of bibliometric and qualitative analyses, the study explores the application of gasification technologies and their integration with coal and biomass for energy efficiency. Findings reveal that coal gasification and co-gasification of coal with biomass significantly reduce carbon emissions while maintaining high thermal output for kilns and other processes. Furthermore, innovations in gasification byproducts, such as glass ceramics, contribute to sustainability by recycling industrial waste. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly the complexity of integrating diverse fuel sources and the high upfront costs of gasification technologies. Evidence reveals that coal gasification offers a cleaner and more efficient energy solution for ceramic industry, contributing to both energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
