Healthcare professionals’ confidence in recognizing different skin conditions presented in primary care: a cross-sectional survey
Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: In a cross-sectional survey to determine healthcare professionals’ confidence in recognizing different skin conditions that present in primary care, a total of 209 clinicians responded: 45% were general practitioners and 55% other clinicians. Confidence was highest for acne, eczema, urticaria and psoriasis. Lowest confidence was reported for pemphigus vulgaris, lichen planus, bullous pemphigoid and discoid lupus. Most (93%) healthcare professionals reported a need for further support, particularly in lesion recognition, skin of colour and dermoscopy. Free-text responses highlighted difficulties in recognizing skin cancers and atypical rashes and limited access to advice and guidance services.
