Effects of grain size, crystal texture, and misorientation on thermoelectric properties of (Bi0.1Sb0.9)2Te3 based compounds

Type: article
Abstract: • We study how grain size, boundary misorientation, and texture affect the thermoelectric behavior of (Bi 0 . 1 Sb 0 . 9 ) 2 Te 3 processed by controlled ball–milling and hot–pressing. • The coarse-grained structure observed for the as-grown (Bi 0.1 Sb 0.9 ) 2 Te 3 compound decreases to ca. 3 µm due to hand-grinding, then decreases down to sub-µm size upon ball-milling. • The fractions of highly misoriented and twin grain boundaries increase with ball–milling duration and level off at approximately 90% and 10%, respectively, accompanied by a reduction in electrical conductivity • Lattice thermal conductivity peaks in as–grown samples and reaches its minimum in hand–ground ones, with ball–milled samples exhibiting similar intermediate values, due to preferred orientations with Te-Te van der Waals bonds parallel to the {0001} basal planes that reduce thermal conductivity along the c-axis.
