Abstract: The authors present a comprehensive study of sluice gate jamming under free discharge conditions, combining physical modeling and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to identify high friction coefficients as the primary cause of closure failures.Their simplified predictive formula for the permissible friction coefficient [Eq.( 6) in the original paper] is a valuable contribution, offering engineers a practical tool to assess gate operability based on submerged weight, water head, and panel area. The proposed emergency measures-reducing radial gate opening or upstream water levels-and long-term solutions, such as stoplog configurations, provide actionable insights for both existing and new hydraulic structures. This work effectively bridges hydrodynamic analysis with operational reliability, addressing a gap in prior research that focused more on downpull forces than on friction dynamics.
