Himalayan Fallout: Navigating Nepal's Post-US Aid Reality
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Nepal's development trajectory has been fundamentally disrupted by the United States' withdrawal from 66 international organizations and the effective termination of USAID programming worth approximately $329 million. This working paper examines the cascading consequences of this withdrawal on Nepal's health systems, civil society, climate adaptation, and geopolitical positioning. Drawing on government data, ILO projections, and field reports through May 2026, the paper argues that the crisis is not merely fiscal but structural—eroding the human capital, institutional memory, and accountability infrastructure that decades of aid-supported development had built. The paper further situates Nepal's formal request for a three-year deferral of its Least Developed Country graduation within this context, contending that dependency was always the system's design flaw, not its anomaly. As regional powers step in with hard infrastructure investment, Nepal faces a narrowing definition of "development" that risks leaving behind the social and democratic scaffolding essential for sovereign self-governance.
