Barriers to sustainability engagement – Evidence from dual universities
Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Dual universities integrate theory and practice into their organizational structure and study design. Due to the inclusion of additional stakeholders and perspectives, dual universities may face unique challenges and opportunities when implementing sustainability. This study, based on a survey of stakeholders at a well-established dual university in Germany, examines barriers to sustainability engagement within the context of dual studies. Qualitative content analysis and quantitative correlation analysis reveal a consistent and comprehensive approach by stakeholders toward sustainability. The results indicate a generally high commitment to sustainability on the part of stakeholders. At the same time, the findings show that the intensive study model and the involvement of multiple stakeholders may create additional constraints when it comes to sustainability engagement. Time restrictions and competing priorities appear particularly pronounced in the dual university context. The analysis also reveals a high degree of consistency in how different stakeholder groups perceive sustainability barriers. Based on these findings, the study highlights the importance of developing a sustainability-informed vision and establishing dedicated organizational structures and responsibilities to support sustainability implementation in dual universities.
