Investigating How Museum Experiences Inform Youths' STEM Career Awareness and Interest

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The data presented here represent a study investigating the effects of attending a medical learning lab at a large science museum. Middle and high school-aged students attended the learning lab and had the opportunity to engage with high tech medical robots typically only found in medical schools. The study examined the effects of medical learning labs on students' interest in science, as well as STEM and health careers. The labs were designed to reflect community health problems common to the surrounding urban area, which has large populations of Black and Latine individuals. As such, we were curious if experiencing the medical learning lab might interact with measures of ethnic and racial identity such that those students who strongly identified with their racial and ethnic identity and identified as Black or Latine would especially benefit from the medical learning lab. We used non-medical learning labs as a control group.
