Influence of Dentin Substrate Selection and ISO Standard Compliance on Shear Bond Strength Outcomes: A Systematic Review
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: This systematic review evaluates the influence of substrate selection and methodological standardization on the in vitro shear bond strength (SBS) outcomes of dental biomaterials. While many studies aim for standardization, significant variations exist in substrate choice and testing protocols. This review specifically focuses on compliance with ISO 29022 and ISO/TS 11405 reference specifications to determine if adherence to these standards reduces inter-study variability. The project systematically maps and compares mean SBS values (MPa) and standard deviation (SD) variance patterns across alternative bonding substrates including non-bovine animal dentin, and acrylic or resin analogue blocks relative to standard human permanent third molar or bovine incisor baselines. By analyzing substrate-driven variations, failure mode distributions, and testing parameters (such as crosshead speed and loading geometry, storage conditions), this review aims to quantify major sources of inter-study heterogeneity and evaluate the impact of non-standardized protocols on the overall reproducibility of dental bond strength literature.
