Abstract: • Assessing ecosystem conservation status requires estimation of favorable reference area. • We assessed favorable reference area for boreal Western Taiga forests. • Two complementary approaches were conceptually developed and applied. • Both approaches converged at 18% of forest area, implying major restoration needs. • Ecological foundations should not be neglected in national policies.
