From AI to AIR: Augmented Intelligence Reasoning · v0.1

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Minor corrections from From AI to AIR: Augmented Intelligence Reasoning · v0.1 to references, in-text citations, terminology consistency, and cross-referencing. No substantive change to the conceptual argument. This working note introduces AIR as a layered conceptual term for examining how reasoning changes when artificial intelligence enters human, institutional, and socio-technical systems. AIR carries three related meanings. First, AIR means Augmented Intelligence Reasoning: a shift of attention from what artificial intelligence can generate to how reasoning itself changes when AI enters the field. Second, AIR means Augmentation Is Relational: augmentation does not occur in the abstract, but is always augmentation of something, for someone, within certain relations, under particular conditions, and with particular consequences. Third, AIR points to the atmospheric quality of AI-mediated environments: like air, AI may become most consequential when it is ambient, backgrounded, and only noticed when pressure, composition, or conditions change. Although the note uses “AI” for readability, much of the discussion is especially concerned with large language model (LLM) environments and related generative systems, where language, representation, interface, and probabilistic reasoning become central conditions of interaction. By shifting attention from artificial intelligence as an isolated object to augmented reasoning as a relational field, AIR asks: what kind of human intelligence becomes more or less possible around AI, and under what conditions? This working note defines the core concept of “From AI to AIR” within the From AI to AIR Series(《从 AI 到 AIR:人工智能时代的范式转型》系列). It establishes AIR as a three-layered concept: Augmented Intelligence Reasoning, Augmentation Is Relational, and AI as Atmosphere. The series further develops this framing through works including From AI to AIR: A Three-Layered Framework for the Emerging AI Paradigm. Relational Dynamics™ is the original theory of system trajectories developed by Dr Alice Jing Shan 单景, providing a lens for understanding how systems form, stabilise, drift, adapt, and sometimes collapse under constraint over time. Version 0.2 establishes AIR as an initial conceptual coordinate within Relational Dynamics™: Theory of System Trajectories, developed through ScholarLand Ltd. From AI to AIR Series(《从 AI 到 AIR:人工智能时代的范式转型》系列)的核心概念 “From AI to AIR” 作出定义。 From AI to AIR: A Three-Layered Framework for the Emerging AI Paradigm ——— Use and Permissions This work is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).
