Psychological Adaptation Mechanisms in Adulthood Under Conditions of Somatic Illness

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Somatic illness in adulthood represents not only a medical challenge but also a significant psychological event that affects emotional regulation, self-concept, interpersonal relationships, and future orientation. Adult patients are often required to integrate the experience of illness into an already established system of personal values, professional responsibilities, and family roles. The present article examines the psychological mechanisms that facilitate adaptation to somatic illness during adulthood. Particular attention is given to cognitive appraisal, coping strategies, psychological defense mechanisms, resilience, locus of control, and social support. The analysis is based on contemporary health psychology, clinical psychology, and developmental psychology literature. The findings indicate that successful adaptation depends on the interaction between personality resources and environmental factors. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for designing effective psychological interventions aimed at improving emotional well-being, treatment adherence, and quality of life.
