Design and Implementation of a Layer 2/Layer 3 Corporate Network Solution

Year: 2026
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This thesis examines the design and implementation of a Layer 2 and Layer 3 corporate network solution in a multi-site enterprise environment. The purpose of the work was to describe how a corporate network renewal can be planned, implemented and transferred to production in a secure and maintainable manner. The project replaced an existing software-defined Local Area Network architecture with a more conventional Layer 2 and Layer 3 campus network model, where switching, routing, Virtual Local Area Network segmentation, redundant uplinks, firewall zones and security policies are explicitly designed and documented. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces the network technologies and architectural principles required for the implementation. These include the OSI model, Ethernet switching, Virtual Local Area Networks, link aggregation, spanning tree protocols, Internet Protocol routing, transport-layer concepts and enterprise campus architecture. The thesis also discusses Palo Alto Networks firewalls as part of enterprise segmentation, high availability, security policy enforcement, Layer 7 security inspection and centralized management. The practical part describes the implementation project from planning and information gathering to device ordering, pre-installation, pilot testing, configuration deployment, site migration, network switchover and handover to service production. Due to confidentiality requirements, customer-specific details are presented in a generalized form. The project was successfully completed and transferred to production use. Application testing and high-availability testing confirmed that business-critical services continued to operate after the migration. The work showed that successful corporate network renewal requires careful planning, realistic pilot testing, application-level validation, clear documentation and controlled handover to operations.
