Corporate Crime

Year: 2025
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: This chapter reveals corporate criminal records of a total of 36,815 firms operating in China and 20 European emerging market economies and empirically analyzes the effects of board composition and national institutions on crime deterrence. We found that 2,259 firms, or about 6% of the sample firms, committed a total of 5,980 crimes between January 2020 and September 2023. These corporate crimes are more frequent in firms with larger boards of directors, but conversely, the presence of female managers and directors inhibits their occurrence. In contrast, board independence does not have a significant crime deterrent effect. On the other hand, national institutions have a strong impact on corporate crime, and this effect is indeed universal across emerging markets.
