Dentin Substrate Selection and Standardization in Shear Bond Strength Testing: A Systematic Review

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: This systematic review evaluates the influence of substrate selection on in vitro notched-edge shear bond strength (SBS) outcomes of dental biomaterials, with a specific focus on compliance with ISO 29022:2013 and ISO/TS 11405:2015 reference specifications. While ISO 29022 provides standardized notched-edge geometry to minimize structural stress concentrations and limit the influence of test mechanics, ISO/TS 11405 offers overarching guidance on the selection, storage, shelf-life, and preparation of biological tooth structures. The review systematically maps and compares effective mean SBS values (MPa) and standard deviation (SD) variance patterns across alternative bonding substrates including non-bovine animal dentin, human primary dentin, and acrylic or resin analogue blocks relative to standard human permanent third molar or bovine incisor dentin baselines. By analyzing these substrate-driven variations and failure mode distributions (adhesive, cohesive, and mixed), this project aims to quantify a significant source of methodological inter-study heterogeneity and determine the impact of non-standard substrates on the overall reproducibility of dental bond strength literature.
