Against migration
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This essay analyzes the Equatoguinean author Donato Ndongo’s discourse against African emigration to Europe, as presented in El Metro (2007) and ¿Qué mató al joven Abdoulaye Cissé? (2023). It explores how these two novels humanize the experience of the current migration crisis and encourage the reader to empathize with the suffering of African migrants and to reconsider the treatment they receive in Europe. They encourage Africans to stay in their country and avoid the risks and the negative consequences for Africa of their migration to Europe. They also remind Western readers about their own responsibility in the mass migration of Africans to Europe, presented as a direct consequence of colonialism and its aftermath, or European intervention in African internal affairs.
