Therapeutic Potential of Datura Metel in Wound Healing: a Comprehensive Review

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The annual herb Datura metel, called Dhatura in India and devil's trumpet in the US, and Hindu Datura, Indian thornapple, or metel in Europe, serves medical purposes for epilepsy treatment alongside skin ailments, hysteria, cardiac conditions, diarrhea, asthma management, and general anesthetic usage. The medicinal plant contains beneficial chemical elements such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and phenolic components that show therapeutic promise for combating infections and persistent illnesses. The antioxidant properties of plant leaves and seeds protect organs and the nervous system from oxidative stress and inflammation. Studies show that Datura metel extracts work as a kidney protector against inflammation. Datura metel contains several phytochemicals that establish it as a powerful natural pharmaceutical plant. Future research should explore its insane wound-healing potential while ensuring safety precautions. Alkaloids like scopolamine, atropine, and hyoscyamine have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anticholinergic properties, potentially treating Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other neurological conditions. Datura metel has been found to speed up wound healing in diabetic ulcers, psoriasis skin, and pressure sores. Datura Metel L. extracts, particularly the methanolic part, have been shown to accelerate and support wound healing, with antidiabetic properties. Datura metel extract may also help treat chronic diabetic wounds, superficial mycoses, and metabolic disorders.
