Design Insights From Building Trustworthy Ai For Public Policymaking: A Trade And Nutrition Project

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Governments are increasingly adopting AI to support public services, yet general-purpose tools introduce risks such as unverifiable sources, limited transparency, and governance outside institutional control. This paper draws on an industry-academia project that built a domain-specific AI knowledge platform for policymakers working at the intersection of trade and nutrition. The goal was not a perfect product but replicable protocols and practical knowledge about what trustworthy public sector AI requires. Two prototypes were developed through iterative co-design with public health experts, IS scholars, and policymakers across four countries, within four months and under tight budget constraints.Three insights emerged: trustworthiness must be built into system architecture from the outset; real-world constraints can produce more equitable and sustainable design decisions; and documenting design rationale is itself an accountability requirement.
