The term "Hijazi Journey" (Al-Rihla al-Hijaziyya) referred to the organized Hajj caravans arriving from the Maghreb. These caravans were accompanied by numerous scholars and seekers of knowledge whose objectives extended far beyond the pilgrimage itself. The Hajj journey provided a precious opportunity for the intellectual convergence of scholars from both the Maghreb (the West) and the Mashriq (the East). The city of Alexandria received a significant share of these Maghrebi journeys due to its strategic location as one of the most prominent major cities along the Hajj caravan route. During the Mamluk era, it stood as a leading cultural hub in the East, boasting a multitude of cultural and educational institutions teeming with scholars. These institutions offered travelers the chance to meet renowned Mashriqi sheikhs, jurists, and prominent scholars whose reputations resonated throughout the Islamic world, facilitating a profound cultural exchange. The pursuit of knowledge in Alexandria was not confined to formal educational institutions like mosques and Madrasas; it extended to other venues, such as the private homes of scholars. Many local scholars opened their residences to Maghrebi visitors for recitation, teaching, and scholarly debates, as well as for granting Ijāzahs (scholarly certifications) to those who earned them. This cultural exchange encompassed religious, spiritual, and scientific fields in all their intricacies and components. It was a reciprocal process of giving and taking, influencing and being influenced, representing the highest manifestation of intellectual fusion and a unified vision in building a cohesive Islamic culture. Undoubtedly, this scholarly and cultural communication between the East and the West in Alexandria played a positive role in revitalizing the scientific and intellectual movement.
