Through Focus Point Spread Function and Modulation Transfer Function of Intraocular Lenses

Abstract: Millions of intraocular lenses (IOLs) are implanted during cataract removal surgery annually, and it is important to understand the optical quality of different IOL designs for patient safety and satisfaction. This paper outlines the design of an optical system to measure the point spread function (PSF) and modulation transfer function (MTF) of IOLs through focus. Unlike traditional edge spread function (ESF) or line spread function (LSF) based measurement systems, the PSF allows the two-dimensional MTF to be calculated directly, independent of the rotational symmetry of the lens. The key components of the design, as well as the validation of the system through simulations, are described in detail. Four different intraocular lenses were tested: an Alcon Acrysof monofocal, an Alcon Panoptix trifocal, an Alcon toric monofocal, and an Alcon toric multifocal. The lenses all exhibited MTF peaks at their associated prescription positions through focus. This methodology displays particular use for toric lenses, where precise angular alignment of non-rotationally symmetric lenses is not necessary with this methodology, contrary to ESF and LSF-based systems.
