The Derivation Behind Lemina

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The Derivation Behind Lemina shows, step by step, how the commitments and apparatus of the Lemina Addressing Metamodel follow from a small set of premises. It is the reasoning companion to the metamodel specification: where the specification states what Lemina is and explains nothing, this document supplies the why, with every linkage in the chain made explicit and every free design choice marked as such. Part I derives the core commitments — textual addressing and one-way, mediated postal operation — from the systems-theoretic view of shared organization (Laszlo), the operations-define-types principle (Liskov–Zilles), an address-delivery duality, and the requirement of substrate portability. Part II derives the four-layer apparatus and sliding design, the mechanism that lets a commitment's placement be traded between layers, against the portability-versus-substrate-inclusiveness cost. Part III derives the three coordinated rule bodies — Addressing, Carrying, and Reception Semantics — from the three loci of the postal line. The narrowness of the core rests on the end-to-end argument (Saltzer, Reed, and Clark); sliding design is positioned as a focused application of multi-level modeling (Atkinson and Kühne). The metamodel specification, the proof-of-concept suite that witnesses the derivation's claims, and the companion philosophy are available at Zenodo.
