Aging and accessibility: stratified analysis of the census in Rio Grande do Sul

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In addition to discussing mobility and accessibility in large urban centers, which are central challenges today, it is essential to consider recent demographic changes that impose new barriers to mobility and access to urban spaces. This article analyzes the Urban Planning Survey of Household Surroundings, conducted as part of the 2010 and 2022 Population Censuses, in the most aged state in Brazil: Rio Grande do Sul. The survey evaluates sidewalks, ramps, bus stops, and obstacles on the streets in two strata of the state’s municipalities – the ten most populous and the ten with the highest proportions of older adults. The results show advancements in infrastructure but also highlight inequalities that require integrated public policies to place aging at the center of urban planning.
