Breakthroughs in indoor herpetoculture: the Protivín Crocodile Zoo experience
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Established in 2008 within a reconstructed historic Schwarzenberg barn, the Protivín Crocodile Zoo represents a unique intersection of private expertise and scientific rigour. What began as a specialised breeding facility in Chvalšiny has evolved intoa 2,000 m² state-of-the-art institution. The facility is renowned for its success in breeding endangered species under unique indoor conditions — completely closed, heated environments with precisely controlled light and temperature regimes. This approach demonstrates that even in Central Europe’s climate, high-level conservation of tropical reptiles is not only possible but can achieve world-first results.
