Students’ Readiness in Conducting CBAR for Training Workshop Development

Abstract: Despite policy mandates requiring pre-service teachers in the Philippines to conduct Classroom-Based Action Research (CBAR), many students, particularly Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) majors in Filipino, remain underprepared due to limited research training and practical exposure. This study assessed their readiness to conduct CBAR and developed a targeted training program to address identified gaps. The researchers employed a cross-sectional survey design and collected data from seventy-seven incoming third-year and fourth-year students during the second semester of school year (SY) 2022–2023 using a validated, researcher-made questionnaire. The results revealed a generally low level of readiness, particularly in technical writing, research formatting, and key sections of the research paper, including the context, methodology, and references. To address these challenges, the researchers designed a four-week CBAR Training Activity Workshop that focused on technical writing, formatting styles, ethical research practices, critical thinking, and hands-on experience through lectures, workshops, group collaboration, and mock defenses. The training aimed to enhance students’ academic writing skills and research competence. Expert evaluators rated most components of the training design as highly appropriate, particularly the training methods (M = 3.67), but identified a significant need to improve the training materials (M = 1.33) to better support higher-order thinking skills and course competencies. These findings highlight the importance of structured, skill-specific interventions in improving students’ research preparedness. Overall, the study reveals that BSED Filipino students lack sufficient readiness for CBAR, especially in technical and methodological areas. The developed training workshop offers a promising and relevant solution to enhance their research abilities and confidence, making it a valuable addition to teacher education programs.
