Grace's Master Process Handbook: A Station Chief's Guide to Working with Governed Care Droids
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: A station chief named Lily Reeves walks you through twenty years of working beside a governed care droid named Grace — from boot-up protocol to emergency response, from the diagnostic chair to the corridor walk at six-fifty in the morning. This is not a technical manual. It is a manufacturer's working handbook narrated by the nurse who sits in the chair. Ten chapters show what governed care looks like on the floor of an assisted living facility: what the five governance functions (REGISTER, BALANCE, CONFIRM, RELEASE, REPORT) look like in practice, what a held state means for the nurse standing beside the machine, and what happens when the architecture bears maximum load. Grace's Master Process Handbook is the second publication in the Engineer's Crosswalk Series from Ember Glyph Foundation. Where Building Governed Inner Speech (Publication #1) provides the engineer's crosswalk from cognitive architecture to deployment, this handbook provides the operator's crosswalk from governance specification to daily practice. The five governance functions demonstrated in this narrative are drawn from the Convergent Architecture for irreversible systems (Allen 2026a), grounded in the inner speech research of Chella and Pipitone (2020, 2021, 2025), and informed by the phronesis findings published in Nature Scientific Reports showing 47.8% fewer caregiver errors when a governed droid reasons aloud beside a human nurse. Target audiences include nurses and care facility administrators preparing to work with governed care droids, robotics engineers designing human-robot interaction systems for vulnerable populations, HRI researchers studying governance frameworks for elder care and child safety, AI governance policymakers developing standards for autonomous systems in care environments, and systems architects seeking a demonstrated application of the Convergent Architecture's five-node command structure. This handbook is freely available under CC-BY 4.0. The architecture it demonstrates is published. The science it cites is peer-reviewed. The chair is yours.
