Abstract: An essay that begins as a dedication to four teachers and becomes an argument about how learning actually happens. It moves from a Rubik's Cube bought during lockdown and solved layer by layer — the way anything worth holding together gets built — to the older question of whether anything is learned at all. Plato has Socrates argue in the Meno that we only recollect what the soul already knew; Locke insists the mind begins as a blank slate written on entirely by experience. The essay declines to choose, on the grounds that in the lived thing both are true: we arrive empty and arrive remembering. Its quantum figures are marked as figures, including the famous thought experiment it uses against the intention of the man who devised it.
