A Cross-Layer, Function-Level Map of Computational Creativity Tools — and the Integration Gap

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: We survey the landscape of computational creativity tools across four layers — structured methods, B2B software, academic instruments, and AI-assisted systems — and five creative-process functions: generation, prediction, evaluation, navigation, and contextualisation. Mapping 58 tools against this framework reveals a consistent integration gap: no single layer covers all five functions in a coherent end-to-end workflow. AI-assisted tools come closest in breadth but remain weakest on evaluation and contextualisation. We argue that closing this gap requires not just better individual tools, but a principled account of which functions each layer is structurally equipped to serve — and where cross-layer integration is both feasible and necessary. Keywords: computational creativity, creativity support tools, ideation tools, gap analysis, taxonomy, creative process, AI-assisted creativity
