Adapting SRQR Principles to Workplace-Based Vocational Education and Training in Australia: A Framework for Evidence, Transparency and Quality Assurance

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This paper examines the potential adaptation of the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR) framework to the design, documentation, assessment and governance of workplace-based Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Australia. While SRQR was originally developed to improve transparency and methodological rigour in qualitative research reporting, its underlying principles of evidence, traceability, context, transparency and auditability provide a useful conceptual foundation for vocational curriculum development. The paper explores the historical evolution of Australian workplace training, analyses the relationship between training package development and evidence-based curriculum design, and proposes a framework for aligning industry consultation, competency development, assessment evidence and validation processes with SRQR-inspired principles. Particular attention is given to workplace portfolios, Recognition of Prior Learning, employer participation, assessor responsibilities and enterprise training models. The paper concludes with policy recommendations for governments, regulators and industry stakeholders seeking to strengthen quality assurance, workforce capability and public confidence in the national VET system.
