Abstract: The paper presents an experimental study of the interaction between the components in the Hf-Co-Sb ternary system. The phase equilibrium diagram of the Hf-Co-Sb ternary system was constructed at 873 K using X-ray powder diffraction, microstructural analysis, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy over the entire concentration range. At the temperature of investigation, the Hf-Co-Sb system is characterized by the formation of three ternary compounds: HfCoSb (MgAgAs structure type, space group F-43m, a = 0.60505(1) nm), Hf6CoSb2 (K2UF6 structure type, space group P-62m, a = 0.76466(1), c = 0.36376(8) nm), and Hf5Co0.5Sb2.5 (Nb5Sn2Si structure type, space group I4/mcm, a = 1.0859(5), c = 0.5515(3) nm). The HfCoSb half-Heusler phase is characterized by a small homogeneity range (up to 2 at. %) along the Sb isoconcentrate. Structure study shows that under the given conditions the Hf6CoSb2 compound exists at stoichiometric composition. The binary phases show no significant solid solubility of the third component. The temperature dependencies of electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient of the half-Heusler phase HfCoSb were measured in the 80-380 K temperature range.
