A study on the key aspects of the BB84 protocol
Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This article presents an overview of the BB84 quantum key distribution protocol, grounded in basic concepts from geometry, linear algebra, and probability theory. The fundamental operating principles of BB84 are described, including state preparation, measurement, basis reconciliation, and post-processing. An analytical performance analysis is carried out to evaluate the impact of intercept–resend attacks, deriving probabilities for detection, interception and precision. Furthermore, a Pauli error model is used to calculate the QBER. Additionally, key length estimation and practical considerations for modern BB84 implementations are discussed, along with a brief overview of quantum key agreement protocols.
