The Business of Waiting: How Delayed Refunds, Settlement Cycles, and Float Money Create Hidden Revenue Streams in Indian Digital Platforms

Abstract: The growth of digital payment platforms in India has changed how money moves in everyday life, and it’s happened pretty quickly too. Not long ago, cash was still the main way people paid for things. Now it’s almost the opposite. Most people focus on the convenience part, how fast everything is and how easy it feels. But there’s also another side to it that doesn’t really get discussed much. There are certain things happening in the background that users don’t really see, and in some cases, these actually benefit the platforms themselves. One example is float money, which is basically money that gets held for a short time in between transactions, like during refunds or settlement delays. The main aim of this study is to look into whether digital platforms in India such as Paytm, Amazon India, Razorpay and others are earning some kind of hidden benefit by holding user funds, even if it’s only for a short time. Because when this happens across thousands or even millions of transactions, it can add up. The study uses a descriptive and exploratory approach. It is based on a survey of 120 people between 18 and 35, along with secondary information from reports, regulatory sources, and existing fintech related research. What the findings show is that delays in refunds are actually quite common, more than people usually expect. At the same time, most users don’t really think about what those delays mean or how they might benefit the platform holding the money. Some freelancers and small sellers also mentioned that they face delays in receiving payments from gateways, which suggests that this is not just a consumer issue. It affects people who depend on these platforms for income as well. In the end, the study suggests that while some delays are understandable because of system or processing reasons, the financial benefit that comes from holding large amounts of user money is not just by chance. It can be significant. And because of that, there is a clear need for better transparency and stronger regulation.
