Digital Creativity with AI : Barriers and Possibilities in Visual Arts Learning
Year: 2026
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This qualitative study explores grade 7 students’ experiences with digital tools and generative AI in visual arts education through the “Digital Time Capsule” project at a primary school in a major Swedish municipality. The study aims to examine how students experience digital tools and generative AI in visual arts, how they relate analog, digital, and AI-supported creation, and how they reflect on AI reliability, source criticism, and bias. A total of 14 students with no prior digital experience in visual arts participated in the project, collaboratively creating interactive artworks using Adobe Express, AI for ideation, and QR codes. The study is based on semistructured interviews and anonymous Padlet discussions, and the data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Thematic analysis of the material reveals key themes such as technical challenges, preference for analog creation, and critical reflections on AI reliability and source criticism. Findings highlight tensions between traditional and digital methods, with implications for didactics under Lgr22. The study contributes student perspectives on digital competence, ethics, and motivation in visual arts education, and recommends blended approaches and guidelines for AI integration to support equitable learning in diverse classrooms.
