Abstract: In this invited commentary, I will share my perspective on evaluating the risks associated with social media use, which draws from socioecological models acknowledging the impact of both youth-specific (i.e., individual differences) and contextual factors that may enhance risk. The opinions shared are informed by my research as a clinical child psychologist and collaborations with scholars across the fields of communications, developmental psychology, and pediatrics. As such, my interdisciplinary take on social media risks acknowledges the years of groundwork laid by scholars across fields. The aim of this commentary is to highlight priorities for studying risk, which should emphasize differential susceptibility, the social contexts relevant to social media effects, and the salient features of social media applications that likely exacerbate risk.
