Abstract: The oxygen consumption of Haliotis gigantea and H. discus in an early developmental stage and juvenile is measured by the use of a Nikko-kagaku's productmeter. The results obtained are as follows: (1) The oxygen consumption from fertilized eggs to trochophore increases with the development of eggs, and the oxygen consumption of trochophore is 43 ul/5,000 eggs/hour. This value corresponds to more than quadruple that of fertilized egg. (2) The early veliger's oxygen consumption is similar to that of trochophore, but the late veliger's oxygen consumption near creeping stage (6 days after fertilization) is higher and measures 91 ul. (3) Fertilized eggs developed to the normal veliger at the density of 400 eggs per mililitter, but when the density of eggs was 1,200 eggs/ml and 2,400 eggs/ml, the developed embryos became abnormal at the rates of 20% and 100%. (4) There is no specific difference in oxygen consumption of the veliger of both species, H. gigantea and H. discus. (5) There is a clear difference in veliger's oxygen consumption between light (about 1,500 lux) and dark (0 lux) conditions, and the oxygen consumption in the dark condition corresponds to 1/2 that of light condition. (6) The oxygen consumption of juvenile (shell length 14.06 mm) increased in proportion to ascending of water temperature within 20-30°C. The oxygen consumptions /kg/hour of juvenile in 20, 25, and 30°C are 103.4, 149.2, and 185.6 ml/kg/hour respcetively.
