Understanding SAP Client Copy: Options, Best Practices, and Automation
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: SAP systems are commonly partitioned into multiple clients, logical subdivisions within a single system, to separate development, testing, and training. The SAP client copy capability replicates client-specific data and configuration between clients, within a system or across systems, and underpins refreshes, testing, training, and sandbox creation. This paper reviews the rationale for client copies, the standard methods and transactions SAP provides, the prerequisites and best practices that keep them reliable, the monitoring and troubleshooting tools available, and the role of automation tooling in regulated environments where consistent, auditable, repeatable copies are essential.
