How do mothers conceptualize invisible work?

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The prevalence of dual-income households, heightened concerns about child safety, and intensifying cultural pressures surrounding parenting have created multiple and often competing demands for families. In 2024 these intensifying demands led the U.S. Surgeon General to release a public health advisory warning that the stressors of modern parenting pose risks to parents’ and their children’s mental health and well-being. Much of the labor completed by parents is invisible – it is not recognized in economic measures, is undervalued in social policy, and sometimes unseen even by those who perform it. Developing conceptual clarity about this unseen work is essential. In this exploratory study we utilize free listing, pile sorting, and cultural consensus analysis to better understand how mothers conceptualize invisible work. This provides an integrated conceptual understanding of invisible work that is foundational to the development of strategies to reduce the consequences of mental overload that often accompanies parenting.
