Linking entrepreneurial resilience, financial ambidexterity, and sustainable performance of small enterprises: The role of growth preparedness

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT This study examines how entrepreneurial resilience contributes to the sustainable performance of small businesses, with financial ambidexterity as a mediator and growth preparedness as a moderator. Data were collected from 478 micro and small businesses in Indonesia using a multiphase approach with a one-year time lag between phases. The hypotheses were tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Entrepreneurial resilience positively affects both financial ambidexterity and sustainable performance. Financial ambidexterity enhances sustainable performance and partially mediates the resilience-performance relationship. Growth preparedness significantly moderates and strengthens the effects of resilience on financial ambidexterity and sustainable performance, as well as the effect of financial ambidexterity on sustainable performance. This study extends dynamic capabilities theory by positioning entrepreneurial resilience as a higher-order capability that enables small businesses to develop financial ambidexterity. It introduces growth preparedness as a boundary condition, demonstrating that a gradual and sustainable growth mindset amplifies resilience and financial ambidexterity. This study provides empirical evidence from an under-researched context—micro and small businesses in a developing economy (Indonesia)—and offers practical insights for owners, managers, and policymakers.
