Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze how students perceive different kinds of feedback provided by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and explore which kind of feedback is the most effective in motivating university students to write English essays. Seven university students participated in the study over seven sessions with ChatGPT generating feedback on seven of their individual English essays. The first three feedback sessions focused on grammar and vocabulary errors, while the remaining sessions focused on cohesion and consistency errors. Then, the students wrote their impressions of the feedback from ChatGPT. Keywords and their contexts were extracted from both the ChatGPT feedback and the students’ impressions by a text mining application, KH Coder. The students perceived the feedback from ChatGPT positively, specifically the feedback on grammar and vocabulary, suggesting that it will become possible to enhance the feedback by incorporating ChatGPT as a feedback tool.
