Abstract: This is a replication dataset for the manuscript titled: "Recurrent illness, persistent gut dysfunction and catabolic growth-mediator profiles constrain post-discharge growth recovery after complicated severe malnutrition." Children in low-resource settings discharged after treatment for severe acute illness complicated by malnutrition remain at high risk of poor growth, yet mechanisms underlying incomplete recovery are not well understood. While inpatient management may stabilize acute complications and allow for the initiation of nutritional rehabilitation, children discharged from hospital often experience substantial morbidity, including growth impairments, cognitive defects, ongoing susceptibility to infection, and changes associated with long-term cardiovascular and metabolic disease. This study integrated epidemiological and mechanistic approaches to test the hypothesis that recurrent post-discharge illness episodes contribute to poor growth recovery after complicated severe malnutrition through interconnected pathways involving gut epithelial injury, microbial translocation, systemic inflammation and disruption of growth-mediator biology. This study used secondary analyses of a randomised controlled trial among HIV-uninfected children admitted with CSM who were prospectively followed for 12 months with active surveillance for incident illness episodes.
