Efficacy of Green Tea Catechins as an Adjunct to Scaling and Root Planing in Chronic Periodontitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Year: 2026
Type: review
Abstract: The most predominant oral disease worldwide is chronic periodontitis, which has adverse effects on both the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament, resulting in the loss of alveolar bone and periodontal ligament; consequently, there is tooth loss. 1 The sixth most prevalent oral condition globally is severe periodontitis, affecting >1.1 billion individuals worldwide, and its prevalence has increased in recent decades. 1 The adverse effects of these oral conditions are not limited to complete or partial loss of tissue function and esthetics but also have systemic health implications, which, in recent studies, include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, negative pregnancy outcomes, and compromised quality of life.1,2 Scaling and root planing (SRP) is generally the treatment of choice for chronic periodontitis. 1 However, the outcomes of SRP are not always predictable, particularly in patients with impaired host response or profound pocket depths. Thus, alternative therapeutic strategies have been examined to enhance treatment outcomes through antioxidant support, suppression of host inflammation, or antibacterial action.3,4 Thus, alternative therapeutic strategies have been investigated to improve treatment outcomes through antibacterial action, suppression of host inflammation, or antioxidant support.3,4
