From Extraction to Duration: Structural Diagnostics of Collapse and the Emergence of Long Term Economies

Abstract: From Extraction to Duration: Structural Diagnostics of Collapse and the Emergence of Long‑Term Economies develops a structural framework for understanding why extraction‑based civilizations reliably enter collapse cycles and why duration‑based systems represent the only stable long‑term alternative. The paper argues that collapse is not caused by moral failure, political mismanagement, or resource depletion, but by a deeper structural mismatch between short‑term extraction operators and the coherence requirements of long‑term systems. Using diagnostics drawn from restriction, coherence, and developmental‑environment theory, the paper shows how extraction economies degrade boundaries, accelerate temporal compression, and destabilize identity at every scale. It then outlines the structural features of duration economies—systems that metabolize conflict, preserve coherence, and extend temporal horizons—demonstrating how they emerge naturally when collapse pressures exceed the adaptive capacity of extraction modes. The result is a unified model of civilizational failure and transformation grounded in operator theory rather than historical contingency.
