The Engine and the Ministry: An Illustrative Framework for Understanding How Ministry Works
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: This practical theology paper uses the illustration of a car engine to help ministries and ministry leaders understand how ministry works and examine themselves. The vision and discipline of a ministry are like the cylinder — the main functional part, directly connected to the movement of the ministry. But a car does not move on the engine alone. Without a cooling system the engine overheats, and without a lubrication system the parts grind and seize. In the same way, a ministry cannot last on vision and discipline alone. Those with the gift of mercy absorb the relational heat that robust discipline generates — they are the cooling system. And the humility and love displayed between members as they work together reduces the friction of different gifts — that is the lubrication system. The paper uses Barnabas as a biblical example of both. It concludes with three self-examination questions for ministry teams and practical recommendations for leaders.
