Understanding the Journey to Industry 5.0: A New Era of Human-Centric, Resilient, and Sustainable Industry
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This paper examines the evolution of industrial systems from the First Industrial Revolution through the emerging Industry 5.0 paradigm, tracing the progression from mechanization and mass production to digitalization, cyber-physical systems, artificial intelligence, and human-centered industrial transformation. Building upon the foundations established by Industry 4.0, the paper explores how organizations are increasingly balancing technological innovation with sustainability, resilience, human well-being, and responsible governance. Industry 5.0 is presented not as a replacement for Industry 4.0, but as its evolution—one that recognizes that long-term industrial success depends on more than efficiency and automation alone. The paper analyzes the European Commission's vision for Industry 5.0 and its three foundational pillars: human-centricity, resilience, and sustainability. It further explores how artificial intelligence governance, collaborative intelligence, supply chain resilience, and management-system thinking are becoming central components of modern industrial strategy. Drawing upon academic literature, international standards, industrial experience, and practical implementation frameworks, the publication examines how organizations can integrate emerging technologies while maintaining accountability, transparency, trust, and social responsibility. Particular attention is given to the role of ISO-based management systems, including ISO/IEC 42001 for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems, ISO 56001 for Innovation Management, ISO 22301 for Business Continuity, ISO 31000 for Risk Management, and other governance frameworks that support organizational transformation. The paper also discusses the growing importance of human-machine collaboration, ethical AI deployment, sustainability-driven innovation, and adaptive operating models capable of responding to increasingly complex global challenges. Through practical examples and implementation guidance, it provides a roadmap for organizations seeking to transition from technology-centric Industry 4.0 initiatives toward more resilient, sustainable, and human-focused Industry 5.0 ecosystems. Intended audiences include executives, industrial leaders, manufacturing professionals, digital transformation specialists, sustainability practitioners, AI governance professionals, management system experts, policy makers, researchers, and organizations seeking practical guidance on implementing Industry 5.0 principles.
