A Conceptual Paper on Behavioural Intention to Use Healthcare Information Systems among Employees in Malaysia’s Healthcare Facilities: The Moderating Role of Age

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: HRMARS - Healthcare Information Systems (HIS) have become important in improving healthcare service quality, operational efficiency, and patient management in healthcare facilities. Despite the increasing investment in healthcare technologies, many healthcare organisations still face challenges in encouraging employees to fully adopt and utilise these systems effectively. This conceptual paper examines the factors influencing employees’ behavioural intention to use HIS in Malaysia’s healthcare facilities. The study adopts the Value-Based Adoption Model (VAM) to explain employees’ technology adoption behaviour. Based on the proposed framework, perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment are categorised under perceived benefit, while perceived technicality and perceived fee are categorised under perceived sacrifice. Perceived benefit and perceived sacrifice influence perceived value, which subsequently affects attitude and behavioural intention to use HIS. In addition, age is proposed as a moderating variable in the relationship between attitude and behavioural intention. This conceptual paper contributes to the understanding of healthcare information system adoption among healthcare employees in Malaysia. The findings may support healthcare administrators and policymakers in developing better implementation strategies and training programmes to improve technology acceptance in healthcare facilities.
