Effects of nitrogen fertilizers with urease inhibitors on N losses via NH3 volatilization and N2O and CH4 emissions in pastures, agricultural systems, and crop rotations: A systematic review
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: This protocol describes a systematic review designed to evaluate the effects of nitrogen fertilizers formulated with urease inhibitors on nitrogen losses through NH₃ volatilization and N₂O and CH₄ emissions in pastures, integrated crop-livestock production systems, and crop rotations involving maize and sorghum. The review will be conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines and will employ the PICO framework to define the research question, establish the eligibility criteria, and develop the search strategy. Electronic searches will be performed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases using descriptors combined with Boolean operators. Peer-reviewed scientific articles, with no restrictions on publication date or language, comparing NBPT-treated fertilizers with conventional urea and reporting at least one of the target gaseous emissions will be included. Study selection will be conducted independently by two reviewers using the Rayyan platform, with disagreements resolved by a third reviewer. Data extraction will include methodological characteristics, edaphoclimatic conditions, fertilization management, and variables related to gaseous emissions. Methodological quality and risk of bias will be assessed using the CASP and JBI critical appraisal tools. The findings will be synthesized through descriptive tables, figures, graphs, and descriptive statistical analyses.
