The Vergers Cottage, Ponteland, Northumberland: Archaeological Monitoring and Recording Report

Year: 2026
Type: report
Abstract: Archaeological Monitoring was undertaken in association with a residential development at the Vergers Cottage, Ponteland, involving the machine excavtion of foundation trenches to the north and west of the extant building and trenches for new services. Structural remains were encountered within the northernmost foundation trench monitored. This comprised the post-medieval remains of a demolished ancillary structure that would have abutted northern elevation of the extant Vergers Cottage building. The structural remains include various elements of stone and brick-built walls, the remains of a stone flag surface and part of a presumably later concrete surface. The westernmost foundation trench exposed part of the wall foundation for the extant Vergers Cottage. All other features and deposits encountered in the trenches monitored generally comprised post-medieval levelling deposits, services and modern surfaces. Two sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from a post-medieval levelling deposit.
